Hypertension, renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibition, and COVID-19 (ARE NOT AN ADDITIONAL RISK FACTOR IN COVID -19 INFECTIONS–ARE AS SAFE AS OTHER BLOOD PRESSURE PILLS)
“…Compared with the use of other antihypertensive drugs, current use of RAAS inhibitors was not associated with increased risk of COVID-19 requiring admission to hospital (odds ratio [OR] 0·94, 95% CI 0·77–1·15, adjusted for potential confounding factors), or increased risk of severe complications from COVID-19 needing intensive care or leading to a fatal outcome (1·08, 0·80–1·47). These findings were uninfluenced by age, sex, or background cardiovascular risk. Moreover, excluding aldosterone antagonists and renin inhibitors and focusing only on ACE inhibitors or angiotensin-receptor blockers made no difference to these conclusions.”J. Harris Comment: This is to say that a common class of blood pressure pills is just as safe as any other.  Hypertension itself is a risk factor, or course.
ACE INHIBITORS:benazepril (Lotensin, Lotensin Hct),captopril (Capoten),
enalapril (Vasotec),

perindopril (Aceon),
quinapril (Accupril),
ramipril (Altace), and
trandolapril (Mavik).
ACE BLOCKERS (about the same thing as inhibitors):Azilsartan (Edarbi)

  • Candesartan (Atacand)
  • Eprosartan.
  • Irbesartan (Avapro)
  • Losartan (Cozaar)
  • Olmesartan (Benicar)

Clinical course of severe and critical COVID-19 in hospitalized pregnancies: a US cohort study

Conclusion

In hospitalized pregnant women with severe or critical COVID-19 infection, admission typically occurred about 7 days after symptom onset, and the duration of hospitalization was 6 days (6 severe versus 12 critical). Critically ill women had a high rate of ARDS, and there was one case of cardiac arrest, but there were no cases of cardiomyopathy, or maternal mortality. Hospitalization for severe or critical COVID-19 infection resulted in delivery during the course of infection in 50% of this cohort, usually in the third trimester. There were no perinatal deaths in this cohort.

(HOW ABOUT SOME GOOD NEWS:  ALL THE MOTHERS AND BABIES LIVED).

(This is a cohort study of pregnant women with severe or critical COVID-19 infection hospitalized at 12 US institutions between March 5, 2020 and April 20, 2020.

Of 64 pregnant women hospitalized with COVID-19, 44 (69%) had severe and 20 (31%) critical disease).

Abbott Coronavirus Test Missed a Large Number of Positive Results Caught by a Rival Firm, Preliminary Study Says
(Washington Post) The Abbott coronavirus test hailed by President Trump and used by the White House failed to detect infected samples in a large number of cases that were caught by a rival firm, a preliminary study says. The speedy Abbott test, which is supposed to determine in five to 13 minutes whether a person has the virus, missed a third of the positive samples found by the diagnostic company Cepheid when both tests used nasopharyngeal swabs, said the study done by a group from New York University. It missed more than 48 percent when both firms’ tests used dry nasal swabs.

Marshall Officers Answer The Call

[Marshall, Texas, May 14, 2020]

[Marshall, Texas] Positive Police-Community relationships can often become clouded by speeding tickets or arrest warrants. Still, one Marshall mother is proud to call attention to the vital work of the Marshall Police Department to assist her family in need during the COVID-19 stay at home orders.

Ms. Tawana Brown-Robinson is the mother of a 29-year-old son with special needs. Ms. Brown-Robinson stated, “my son had become agitated as he wants to ride his bus and enjoy the friendship of others, but he doesn’t understand that COVID-19 keeps us at home. He became very anxious, and I needed to call for police assistance due to his strength.”

Ms. Brown-Robinson gave testimony to the positive, caring interaction between her family and Officers Joshua Whitaker and Timothy Sipes of the Marshall Police Department. She shared, “when Officers Whitaker and Sipes arrived at my home, they were so professional. After talking to me, they spoke to my son in a calm tone. Days later, Officers Whitaker and Sipes made another visit to my home to check on the health of my son and ensure he was able to take his medication. When people expect negative interactions with police, it is a blessing to see their care for my family and neighborhood.”

Marshall Police Chief Cliff Carruth shared, “the actions of Officers Whitaker and Sipes are a prime example of Marshall’s commitment to building relationships within our community. The officers performed their duties during the initial call and then remained visible in the lives of the Brown-Robinson family by checking on the health and well-being of her son at a later date. This week is National Police Week. We are proud of these officers for their focus on collaboration with citizens, being visible in our city, and improving the competency of our department to serve individuals with special needs.”
