CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 6/30/2020

June 30, 2020

HARRISON COUNTY JUDGE SIMS:

June 29, 2020 – 17 new cases (16 are in a long-term care facility) and 30 recoveries to report today. The graphic shared below from the Health District was created using data from last night. We had one additional positive come in last night that is included in today’s numbers.

Please let this jump in our numbers be an encouragement to you to practice excellent hygiene and prevent the spread. Join me in praying for all of these affected.

This coronavirus mutation has taken over the world. Scientists are trying to understand why. This coronavirus mutation has taken over the world. Scientists are trying to understand why.

At least four laboratory experiments suggest that the mutation makes the virus more infectious, although none of that work has been peer-reviewed. Another unpublished study led by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory asserts that patients with the G variant actually have more virus in their bodies, making them more likely to spread it to others.

The mutation doesn’t appear to make people sicker, but a growing number of scientists worry that it has made the virus more contagious. (Especially in Europe and the US)

SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes the disease covid-19, can be thought of as an extremely destructive burglar. Unable to live or reproduce on its own, it breaks into human cells and co-opts their biological machinery to make thousands of copies of itself. That leaves a trail of damaged tissue and triggers an immune system response that for some people can be disastrous.

This replication process is messy. Even though it has a “proofreading” mechanism for copying its genome, the coronavirus frequently makes mistakes, or mutations. The vast majority of mutations have no effect on the behavior of the virus.

“… most places where the original virus was dominant before March were eventually taken over by the mutated version. This switch was especially apparent in the United States: Ninety-six percent of early sequences here belonged to the D variant, but by the end of March, almost 70 percent of sequences carried the G amino acid instead.”

CDC ON MASKS

(J. Harris: The way I read this is that Cotton is OK; leave the surgical N95 masks for health care workers. BUT, there are now good surgical quality masks availble most anywhere in the US, so why not use them if possible? I’ll looking hard at shields. More later on shields.

Some Experts Say Face Shields Better Than Masks for Coronavirus Protection

(J. Harris: God will forgive me for quoting from the AARP, perhaps, but good article on masks VS shields. I just order two shields, after a hot 1.25 hour meeting in a mask).

  1. Covid-19: Oxford Team Begins Vaccine Trials in Brazil and South Africa to Determine Efficacy (BMJ) Vaccine developers at the University of Oxford have begun testing their covid-19 vaccine candidate in multiple countries around the world, in the hope that it will increase their chance of determining efficacy.
  1. How to Forecast Outbreaks and Pandemics (Foreign Affairs) Despite some successes, serious gaps remain in the ability of infectious disease models to inform public health policy. That is because the country has no centralized system for disease forecasting; there exists no epidemiological equivalent of the National Weather Service. That is precisely what the country needs to succeed in the fight against COVID-19 and to avoid future failures and missteps of the sort that has marred the U.S. response to the current pandemic.
  1. U.S. Withdrawal from WHO Threatens to Leave it ‘Flying Blind’ on Flu Vaccines (STAT) Twice a year, influenza experts from 10 institutions around the world meet at the World Health Organization’s Geneva headquarters to pore over mounds of data. At the end of the weeklong meetings, they make decisions that affect people around the world: namely, which variants of the flu virus should be used for vaccinations the following season.

June 29, 2020

Note from Judge Sims: June 28, 2020 – I have not been notified of any new cases for today. I know that many have seen a number of cases announced on one of the nursing home Facebook pages. I can’t confirm an exact number since sometimes addresses are different, but it looks like about 8 of those cases are already included in the numbers reported. I expect a large number of those unreported cases to be reported tomorrow.

Please continue to take precautions and do your part to slow the spread.

The Strange Spectrum of Pandemic Response (good article and here are a few excerpts)

I practice strict social distancing and remind my patients and their families to do the same. However, there are others in my state who are equally worried — but about their loss of civil liberties; they protest, refuse to wear masks, gather in crowds. Right now, I’m proud of the fact that my church has decided against holding in-person services, but there are also others in my church railing against this very decision. I think my church leaders are acting with great wisdom; others think that they are acting out of lost faith. I practice strict social distancing and remind my patients and their families to do the same. At my most tired, most burnt out, and most frustrated, I am pounding out angry words on my laptop: How can people think this pandemic is a hoax?! Face coverings are not and shouldn’t be a political statement!! Why are people hanging out in bars without masks!? Do they not care that there are hundreds of thousands of people dying from this!? Their reckless behavior is an affront to all health care workers — why are they fighting against our fight!?At my most tired, most burnt out, and most frustrated, I am pounding out angry words on my laptop: How can people think this pandemic is a hoax?! I’m not sure I can say, with cold facts and hard evidence, that my worries and my responses are more rational and reasonable than those of others who think and act differently from me. However, our different perspectives and priorities seem to have shaped our pandemic response styles and pitted us against each other in some way that I fear will be detrimental when it comes to this pandemic: less solidarity, widening rifts between groups of people, more infections, more lives lost.

CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 6/25/2020

June 25, 2020

June 24, 2020 – One new case to report today for Harrison County.

WASHINGTON POST:
New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have ordered mandatory, 14-day quarantines for people traveling from states with high coronavirus infection rate averages. Right now, that means Florida, Arizona, Texas and six others currently in the grip of surging cases and hospitalizations meet the threshold of experiencing “significant community spread,” according to New York Gov. Andrew M Cuomo (D), whose state was once the virus’ American epicenter. “We also have to make sure the virus doesn’t come on a plane again,” he said. “Learned that lesson.”

“…“The beauty of this [technology] is the inherently simple design,” he says. The polyester material is printed with alternating spots of silver and zinc resembling polka dots. They are one to two millimeters wide and spaced one millimeter apart. When the electroceutical material is dry, it functions as an ordinary fabric. But if it gets dampened—say, with saliva, vapor from a coughed up droplet or other bodily fluids—ions in the liquid trigger an electrochemical reaction. The silver and zinc then generate a weak electric field that zaps pathogens on the surface.”

THE BEST OF THE WORST IN GERRYMANDERING

By George Smith

The most recent national verbal dust-up caused by President Trump opening his tweeter is about the right of every citizen to vote in open and free elections.

Federal and state governments, if  shareholders believe that all eligible  people should be able to vote in any vote in any election, should make it easy for folks to vote.

Instead, in the national game of “Suppress the Vote of The Opposing Party,” no trick is too dirty, no late-night state law change is unethical, no excuse to put up deterrents to open voting for those philosophically opposed to a specific group voting is beyond the possible.

From outright discrimination to selective tactics — poll tax, intelligence tests, gerrymandering, disabling voting processes, closing voting sites — discrimination aimed at diluting the voting power of specific groups has always been a part of American political history.

Controlling or funneling votes of the
opposition is not limited to the GOP of Donald Trump in 2020, it’s just that the ham-handed tactics of Trumpeters in suppressing opposition voters is just so blatant. (In 1975, Arkansas Democratic Party legislators gerrymandered a U.S. representative district that included a county as far north as one abutting the Missouri line and as far south leaning on Louisiana and Mississippi. (See map in comments below.)

The GOP is 2020 is against voting by mail … now. In 2016, the day party heavily promoted absentee to its base.

Now, however, GOPers are pulling out all stops to squeeze the life out of opposition voters.   Absentee voting is bad, too much chance of fraud; voting with a valid ID is the only way to ensure registered voters cast ballots; dramatically shrinking the number of polling locations will hold down turnout; blasting TV, radio and social media ads negatively listing possible problems (from pandemic exposure to violence) negatively affects turnout.

Changes are needed on a national basis to ensure every single eligible voter is encouraged  to vote and energized to do so.

—Change dates for election to encourage maximum participation by all eligible voters: 1. Major elections moved to Saturday; 2. If on a weekday, general elections become a national holiday; 3. No-excuse absentee and/or mail-in ballot available for every eligible voter; 4. Mandate a voting location for every (x-number, to be determined) registered voters.

Can the U.S. be a true democracy without ensuring and encouraging every citizen to vote and making it easy for them to do so?

And your answer is…?

Below: 1976 gerrymandering of Arkansas 1st Congressional District held by Democrat Bill Alexander contained 80 percent of the state’s minority population.

Bless their hearts!

By George Smith

It’s sad to even think about, but the traditional Republican Party is no more. It is now, unofficially…but, officially unofficially… the Party of Trump.

If he is defeated in November, and while the GOP is pushing the gurneys of those that barely survived the election carnage, the walking wounded of the Party of Trump will never lose stride. Those with the loudest, most strident snd defiant voices will diligently struggle to take 30-40 percent of the party and form the America First Party,  America for Americans Party, or, maybe America Strong! Party.

.”Republican”, as a brand,  now has the value of a used Depends.

Whatever it is called, the new post-Trump movement will be a constipated version of the free-flowing and spasmodic platforms and policies of Trump and his acolytes.

The state if Republicanism 2021 will  render the traditional conservative movement known as the GOP a toothless politician pawn to be used by the next-generation of career opportunists like Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton.

With Trump TV spewing his praise-me filth 24/7 (with the “me” personal profile ADT (after Donald Trump) changing like thin sleets in a Las Vegas brothel), the Democrats will run Washington for the next 30 years or so.

After Trump succumbs to an accidental  overdose of medicinal Clorox administered by the eldest youngest son Eric, and after JDT Junior’s “Revive  Trump’s America” rally in Dallas — at which only 471 people show up, including paid staff, 108 news correspondents, including 97 from Fox News, and police in riot gear —  the movement is declared dead.

Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson, with guests Rudy Guiliani, Kellyanne Conway and the White House press secretary firmerly known as “GOP Barbie” in a one-hour special on Trump TV.

Reporters covering the event noted the  “one-hour event” only last 37 minutes, including seven minutes of commercials for MAGA merchandise, distressed, left-over Ivanka Fashion Week items and condos for sale at Trump Tower in New York City.

Conway, who observers noticed had apparently had additional facial restructuring since that morning when she served coffee and donut holes to the Fox News crew and looked  “30, but by the post-special break-out session looked like a high school cheerleader, complete with pompoms,” became irate  at the “fake news’ obsession with taking a poo on the legacy of Donald J. Trump.

“The special lasted the full hour! It was, uh, just a fast hour!”

Bless their hearts!

“… Harrison County Judge Chad Sims said his county has three new COVID-19 case, raising the total there to 272. Harrison County has seen 26 deaths, 181 recoveries and has 66 active cases.”
In Gregg County, County Health Administrator A.J. Harris reported no new cases, keeping the total at 308.

J. HARRIS: Current quotations from a Houston area Board Certified Internist whom I know and trust and also the physician who alerted me to the fact that  the number or  census of patients hospitalized in various areas is likely the most important statistic that needs to be followed:

     1. “The R value needs to stop being discussed as people are fantastically ignoring the incredible amount and (good) effect of six feet and a mask. Early, before six feet and a mask, the R was closer to three and THAT tells us about this bug–it is transmissible as hell. The proximity to one adds to the illusion when it really is just a report card on how well we are six feet-masking. A proper R would approach zero.
     2. After reading travel post yesterday, 21 June: flying is stupid if the anecdotal experience of my practice counts–five of my six cases came from flights….travel by car, use Dome shaped-95 masks, keep six feet, of distance from others, drive toward destinations with  LESS COVID activity, not to vacation hot spots crawling with disease. If you do these things, travel can be almost safe.”
    3. ” I agree on six feet and a mask in general and I am ready to add best find a dome-shaped N-95 as shortages to medicos is not the rule anymore and dome works better than “duckbill” that comes out with a sharp angle to it.”

Contact tracing in NYC is off to a slow start (NYT not linked)
In lieu of a vaccine, contact tracing is one of the few tools that public health officials have to fight Covid-19, along with widespread testing and isolation of those exposed to the coronavirus. The stumbles in New York’s program raise fresh concerns about the difficulties in preventing a second surge of the outbreak in the city, which is to enter a new phase of its reopening on Monday. Texas again sets 1-day COVID-19 record

Harrison County Judge Chad Sims said his county has three new COVID-19 case, raising the total there to 272. Harrison County has seen 26 deaths, 181 recoveries and has 66 active cases.

“We have enjoyed a nice downward trend in our active cases,” Sims said in a statement. “Don’t let up now on the personal hygiene and social distancing.”

J.Harris: I read about COVID for several hours most days. I am convinced that the most important self preventive measure that folks can employ at this time — in this city, in this county, in this state, in this country is to WEAR A MASK  when you are out and about around other people. Avoid the crowd, of course, and we will have a vaccine and treatment before long. Our area had a rough start, but look at us now! Masks work in the orient. They will work here.

R FACTOR: HOW FAST WILL COVID SPREAD

These are up-to-date values for Rt, a key measure of how fast the virus is growing. It’s the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. If Rt is above 1.0, the virus will spread quickly. When Rt is below 1.0, the virus will stop spreading.
