Namibia Travel

Editor note:

Today I received this email from Tom Allin – World Traveler.  He forwarded photos and a story from a friend.  I thought that some of us  Harrison County travelers should see what real travelers do.

We met Thomas in the middle of nowhere in the mountains of northwest India.  He and his wife were driving east and we were driving west.  We went by each other and then both of us put on the brakes and jumped out to talk.  We probably saw less than 20 vehicles on the road/trail that day.  I have no idea how he was able to drive his Man truck on the road we had just completed, too big for the road.

They are from Switzerland and have been exploring Africa for at least the last 2.5 years – the pandemic didn’t slow their travels down.  We met them four years ago in India.  He is an amateur photographer — I think some of his photos are very good, and there are lots of photos.  Some pretty wild men hairdos from Namibia where most of the photos were taken.  A few photographs from South Africa.

Photography – March 13, 2022

By Ron Munden

Blending Images

******************

About five years ago I took a week off to attend the Texas School of Professional Photography.  The school is conducted once each year in the Dallas area.  It offers some 30  to 40 classes on a wide variety of subjects.  As I recall about 1500 people attended the year I went.

I wanted to take training  on a subject that I knew almost nothing about.   I selected a course on fine-art photography.  The class was taught by award-winning  fine-art photographer Thom Rouse.  He is Chicago based and has been photographing  professionally since 1994.

Thom’s book, After the Camera – Digital Transformations for Conceptual Nude and Portrait Photography served as the” textbook”/ inspiration  for this class.  All the class work was done using Photoshop. Although,  I had been using Photoshop for over 30 years, this class was the most challenging class have taken  since I got out of graduate school in 1970.

I am very impressed by Thom’s work and decided I was going to commit time to increasing my understanding of the process and working to create images similar to those in Tom’s book.  Of course, then I returned to the real world I completely lost sight of the goal.

And then came March 2020 bringing the COVID pandemic to this country.  My full plate quickly became an empty plate.  I had spare time and nowhere to go. I dusted off the class notes that I took in Dallas and began to work on blending images.

Now I produce simple blended images or Thom might say, “digital transformations for conceptual nude and portrait photography.”

My images are still very simple.  My images usually involve 5 to 20 layers and I can produce up to 3 images during the hour that I devote to this project most days.  Thom’s  creations involve  40 to 100s of layers and take him days if not weeks to complete.  The quality of his work reflects the care and time he puts into creating with final product.

I sold my first photos and  became a street artist in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1970.  With the exception of one period of about three  years  when I put my camera away,  I have shot continuously for over 50 year.  Some of those years I shot over 40,000 images but I do not think I have done anything creative in the last 15 years.

Although my blended images are simple and sometimes amateurish,  I feel like I am being creative and will continue down this road.  Look out Thom – I am only 90 layers behind you!

Opinion: Ukraine

By George Smith  –March 13, 2022

Yes, the situation worries me. I don’t like the concept of war in any sense, regardless of circumstances. I understand at times that personal safety, protecting one’s country and family and protection of one’s friends and allies requires a strong response.

That said, throughout history wars have mostly been about the psychological bugaboos surrounding four elements: Turf, territory, title and ego.

Many times, one or more of these elements are the motivating factors of wars. In the case of Vladimir Putin and his ordered invasion of Ukraine encompass three (maybe all four) of those elements. He has his turf, wants more territory, believes he is ordained as the world’s leader and has a gargantuan ego.

With those four elements at work…what will stop him? The Ukraine borders? Since when in history did borders stop any invader set on domination, increasing his power and influence and believing that conquering others was his destiny?

CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 3/9/2022

J. HARRIS: Covid attacks are cooling off at present. FLU cases are increasing.

Now is a good time to get your flu shot and keep your Covid Boosters up to date. See your dentist and get your mammograms and checkups. Is your blood pressure doing alright? Avoid sick people and don’t let your family go out if they are even a little bit sick. In areas where the majority of the population is unvaccinated, continue to be wary and masked in crowds.

Covid vaccinations and boosters are now available at most area pharmacies, including 4th Boosters.

Flu and Covid Vaccinations are available at  Harrison County Health Department as are  4th. Boosters for “Immunocompramized” individuals, in various categories that almost include many older individuals. You don’t need a doctor’s statement to prove that you are immunocompromised. You do not have to show any documents. Also, by getting boosters, you will not be “wasting” vaccines that someone else might need. Plenty of Covid vaccine is currently available in the US.  ”Individuals should ask their personal physicians if they are eligible for and need  a 4th Booster.” You must fill out 3 short forms, one of which states that you are ”Immunocompramized” and therefore eligible for the 4th Jab. Various drug stores are able to do this, but they might not be as “enlightened” about 4th Jabs as are the various county Health Departments. The Marshall/Harrison County Health Dept. can be reached at 903 938 8338. You should call for their schedule before going by. (They are next door to the hospital). They are not open for injections every day. You can also get a FLU SHOTS at the Health Dept. if you need it. Talk to your doctor. I can not advise individuals to get a 4th. jab, but I “qualified” and got one. Also, a certain Norwegian Housekeeper is waiting for the 6 months to elapse from the date of her 3rd Jab to get her 4th.

Omicron sub-variant BA.2 makes up 11.6% of COVID variants in U.S. – CDC

”…Omicron sub-variant BA.2 makes up 11.6% of COVID variants in U.S. – CDC’

(J. Harris: BA.2  probably not as deadly but more contagious than regular Omicron. Vaccines protect against severe disease. Reinfections are not uncommon.

France’s new COVID-19 infections start creeping up again

French health authorities reported 93,050 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, the highest daily total since Feb 22, and an increase of 16.6% versus a week ago.

(J. Harris: No mention was made of which Covid strain is in France now, but a Variant B.1.640.2 ( AKA I.H.U)was reported in France and Poland earlier this year, thought to have originated in Cameroon. I would also guess that it could be BA.2 as well since that Variant has been all over Denmark. It seems that most of the Variants that have been recently studied by genetic sequencing are responsive to our current vaccines. Like the Deltas, the Omicron variants are less virulent in vaccinated folks. So, at present most of the more medically sophisticated countries are lessening dependency of quarantines, masks, spacing, crowd avoidance and the like. They are placing more reliance on testing, voluntary isolation, and VACCINATIONS.)

AND LASTLY:

Lewis Grizzard said: In the south there’s a difference between ‘Naked’ and ‘Nekkid.’ ‘Naked’ means you don’t have any clothes on. ‘Nekkid’ means you don’t have any clothes on and you’re up to somethin’.

Ate salad for dinner. Mostly croutons and tomatoes. Really just one big round crouton covered with tomato sauce and cheese FINE, it was a pizza…. OK, I ate a pizza!  Are you happy now?

Arming Ukraine

World News – March 8, 2022

from  New York Times

‘Arming Ukraine: 17,000 Anti-Tank Weapons in 6 Days and a Clandestine Cybercorps’

The United States has walked to the edge of direct conflict with Russia in an operation that is reminiscent of the Berlin airlift of 1948-49, but far more complex.

******************

On a snowy tarmac at Amari Air Base in northern Estonia on Sunday morning, pallets of rifles, ammunition and other weapons were being loaded onto one of the largest cargo planes in the world, an Antonov AN-124, belonging to the Ukrainian air force. It is an artifact of the Cold War, built and purchased when Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union.

Now it is being turned back against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, part of a vast airlift that American and European officials describe as a desperate race against time, to get tons of arms into the hands of Ukrainian forces while their supply routes are still open. Scenes like this, reminiscent of the Berlin airlift — the famed race by the Western allies to keep West Berlin supplied with essentials in 1948 and 1949 as the Soviet Union sought to choke it off — are playing out across Europe.

In less than a week, the United States and NATO have pushed more than 17,000 antitank weapons, including Javelin missiles, over the borders of Poland and Romania, unloading them from giant military cargo planes so they can make the trip by land to Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and other major cities. So far, Russian forces have been so preoccupied in other parts of the country that they have not targeted the arms supply lines, but few think that can last.

Former Marshall Main Street Manager discusses appeal of termination

City Government – February 27, 2022

from  Marshall News Messenger

Former Marshall Main Street Manager discusses appeal of termination

******************

A meeting to discuss an appeal of Marshall’s former Main Street Manager Veronique Ramirez’s termination has taken place, both Ramirez and the city confirmed.

Ramirez was terminated from her position at the end of last year amid a range of unusual circumstances and formally appealed her termination with the city. That appeal lead to a formal appeal hearing, which Ramirez and her attorney, Josh Maness, as well as interim city manager David Willard confirmed took place last month.

Willard also confirmed that the meeting did take place before the city posted a job opening for the new Main Street Coordinator position.

Ramirez said she was present at the meeting along with Maness, city attorney Scott Rectenwald and Willard.

Willard described the meeting as cordial, stating that he was grateful for Ramirez coming in and sharing with him details on what occurred with the termination.

“While it is very unfortunate me and the city parted ways, I have learned valuable lessons, and I will take with me the knowledge of municipality processes, how to manage a geographic area and organize a large-scale festival,” Ramirez said. “I am forever grateful for all the support from city co-workers to downtown business and interest holders that have supported me along the way.”

Rumors surrounding the termination began when Ramirez officially filed to run for the City of Marshall District 5 council seat in the upcoming May election.

Marshall Community and Economic Development Director resigns

City Government – February 27, 2022

from  Marshall News Messenger

Marshall Community and Economic Development Director resigns from city

******************

The City of Marshall’s Community and Economic Development Director Fabio Angell officially resigned from his position last week.

According to interim city manager David Willard, Angell resigned from his position and is no longer working with the city, though his resignation is not effective until March.

Willard said that Angell utilized vacation time and will not return to his work with the city before the effective date of his resignation.

The decision whether or not to replace Angell with a new hire, or to promote current city employees, has not yet been made, according to Willard, who said that the city planned to announce that decision early next week.

Angell joined the city in December 2020, bringing with him over a decade’s worth of experience in urban planning, downtown revitalization and economic development.

More information on what the city of Marshall plans to do with the Director position for Community and Economic Development will be released by the News Messenger as it becomes available.

Opinion: I do not openly embrace negativism

Opinion: I do not openly embrace negativism

By George Smith  –February 19, 2022

I do not openly embrace negativism for the sheer sake of being negative. I do, however, by DNA, education and professional experience, do not suffer fools lightly and do not accept a “truism” until it has, in fact, been verified as true by two or more reliable sources.

Yes, I write negative commentary; yes, I call out the inexcusable abuses foisted upon individuals or groups by people of wealth and power who think it their right to use their position  to do so.

My intent in providing my viewpoint  is two-fold: To present a different viewpoint, and to create an environment for thought.

Getting folks to agree with me has  never my intent in writing thousands of opinion pieces, both print and electronic; proving a simple pathway of thought-provoking commentary … that is what I seek.

I detest pomposity to any degree, just as I abhor people in power-positions proclaiming themselves experts in

areas in which they have no knowledge except for the simple act of listening to and mimicking parrot-speak from one-trick talking  media ponies.

I do not hate Donald Trump. I simply do not see in him one iota of any redeeming social value. I do not wish him any harm, other than whatever legal troubles he brought upon himself. I do admit, however, the sheer act of reading his obituary could easily create a need for me to do the Tigger happy dance.

Unlike many rich folks and a majority of politicians, I do not want my detractors to break out in boils or or be forced to drink sewer water.

I have to assume they, at times, are as uncomfortable in their skin just l as I am comfortable in mine.

Now, that possibility makes me smile.

CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 2/19/2022

FROM THE ATLANTIC

COVID Won’t End Up Like the Flu. It Will Be Like Smoking.

”…Hundreds of thousands of deaths, from either tobacco or the pandemic, could be prevented with a single behavioral change.

….and that many COVID deaths, like many smoking-related deaths, could be prevented with a single intervention….not to get vaccinated against COVID is, right now, a modifiable health risk on par with smoking, which kills more than 400,000 people each year in the United States..The COVID vaccines are, without exaggeration, among the safest and most effective therapies in all of modern medicine. An unvaccinated adult is an astonishing 68 times more likely to die from COVID than a boosted one. Yet widespread vaccine hesitancy in the United States has caused more than 163,000 preventable deaths and counting. Because too few people are vaccinated, COVID surges still overwhelm hospitals…”

FROM HOPKINS:

1. As Omicron Surged, Covid-19 Spread Through Patients in Hospitals (Wall Street Journal) As the Omicron variant surged through communities across the U.S., it also spread inside hospitals and infected non-Covid-19 patients, reaching a record number, a Wall Street Journal analysis of U.S. government data found. The daily total of patients with Covid-19 that they caught in hospitals reached a record of about 4,700 during the Omicron wave in January, according to the analysis of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services data.

2. California Unveils Plan To Become First State To Treat Coronavirus As ‘Endemic’ Risk (Washington Post) “We are moving past the crisis phase into a phase where we will work to live with this virus,” Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said at a news conference. “People are looking forward to turning the page,” he added. “They also need to know we have their back, we’re going to keep them safe, and we’re going to stay on top of this.” California’s plan, he said, shifts from a “crisis mentality” to emphasize prevention and adaptability, allowing officials to step up measures to detect and contain fresh outbreaks, as well as to look out for new variants. It also includes more public campaigns against misinformation and the stockpiling of tests and equipment rather than mask mandates and business shutdowns.

FROM JAMA:

Evaluation of Antimicrobial Drug Use and Concurrent Infections During Hospitalization of Patients With COVID-19 in Japan

”…The findings revealed that concurrent infectious diseases rarely occurred despite the infrequent use of antimicrobial drugs during hospitalization among patients with COVID-19 infection, most of whom had noncritical cases. This finding supports the results of recent studies showing that concurrent bacterial infections were uncommon in patients with COVID-19 infection.1-3 Given that most patients with noncritical severity recovered without antimicrobial drugs, the use of most antimicrobial drugs to treat noncritical cases in many hospitals might be unnecessary. Antimicrobial drugs should be used cautiously to treat patients with COVID-19 infection…”

(J. Harris: The usual antibiotics are not indicated in Covid infections.)

CORRESPONDENCE FROM NEJM:

Protection against the Omicron Variant from Previous SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Overall, in a national database study in Qatar, we found that the effectiveness of previous infection in preventing reinfection with the alpha, beta, and delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 was robust (at approximately 90%), findings that confirmed earlier estimates…Such protection against reinfection with the omicron variant was lower (approximately 60%) but still considerable. In addition, the protection of previous infection against hospitalization or death caused by reinfection appeared to be robust, regardless of variant.

”…Among the patients with reinfection, progression to severe Covid-19 occurred in one patient with the alpha variant, in two patients with the beta variant, in no patients with the delta variant, and in two patients with the omicron variant. None of the reinfections progressed to critical or fatal Covid-19…”

(J. Harris: This is more information from a study we looked at a week or so ago from Qatar involving a very young (31-35  Y/O) population. This second letter indicates some protection against the Omicron variant from the previous infections with other Covid organisms was found (60%) as well as milder disease with all the organisms.  Perhaps, at least with young people, subsequent  future reinfections won’t overwhelm our hospitals and morgues?)

LASTLY:

I plan to introduce Geriatric Ice Dancing at subsequent Winter Olympics.  I expect to enter in the ”Big Boy Classification” which will include Belly Spinning. And remember, “Big Boys don’t cry!”

I don’t mean to brag, but I finished my 14-day diet food supply in 3 hours and 20 minutes

10 Driving Basics

Driving Information – February 16, 2022

from Say Insurance

Driving Tips

******************

Editors note:

Recently I was contacted by a company that had some good information on safe driving.  I decided it would be good information for our readers.  This is the information that was provided to me.

You needn’t be a novice behind the wheel to find yourself wondering about some seemingly basic car questions. Plenty of people are unsure about when, exactly, they should downshift, so if you’ve got some car questions you’re embarrassed to ask, we’ve got you covered with this nifty infographic.

For example, do you know how to cool off a hot car in a jiffy? It’s possible to reduce the temperature by 15 degrees by opening the driver’s door, powering on the vehicle’s accessories, lowering the passenger side rear window down, opening and closing the driver’s door five times (at normal speed), then rolling up the windows and blasting the AC. It might sound wild, but it works because opening the door sucks cooler outside air into the car through that rear window. If you’d like more information about that, or are curious about things like downshifting or choosing the appropriate type of gas for your car, give the following graphic a read before your next ride.

10 Driving Basics You May Be Embarrassed to Ask About

You may have a stellar driving record and change your own oil. You could love being behind the wheel, chasing thousands of miles on a road trip in your well-maintained vehicle. Then the low-gas warning light turns on, and you aren’t sure how far you can drive. Even if you took driver’s education and read the driver’s manual, you probably have questions about operating your vehicle. Don’t worry, we’re here to help with your driving mysteries.

How to Lifehack Your Car

Read on to learn about 10 often-misunderstood driving subjects, and discover tips to improve how you maintain and drive your vehicle.

1. Defog the windshield

After cleaning the frost or snow off your windshield, you may struggle with fog on the inside of the glass.
