Continuing the Josey Legacy

R.E. and Martha Josey began their rodeo careers in the 1960s when Martha competed as a barrel racer, and R.E. competed as a calf roper. After meeting at a Rodeo, the couple fell in love, got married, and started down the rodeo road together. As they began to progress in their respected events the couple was seeing great success in their events. With a shared vision of starting a rodeo school, the couple moved to Martha’s childhood home Marshall, TX where they hosted their first rodeo school in the summer of 1967.

For the last 55 years, the Josey Ranch has continued to build a legacy through the Rodeo Industry training World Champions as the longest run rodeo school in the world.

This past weekend the Josey Ranch concluded its annual Spring I clinic with 77 barrel racers coming from ten different states including, Florida, Colorado, and Brazil. Students and their families spent the weekend on the Ranch working on barrel racing techniques, training methods, perfect practice, and learning how to set attainable goals for 2022 with Martha, Gary, and their impeccable staff.

Amongst the 77 students, many came together to spend the weekend learning from the Josey Ranch Instructors. Brandi Williams, a Texas Trainer, brought 12 students from her lesson program. This group included 12 students, 15 horses, 5 dogs, 5 trailers, and nearly 30 people total to all to Marshall, TX for the weekend.

“We love teaching,” explained Martha’s nephew and Josey instructor Gary Arthur. “We have taught thousands of students in the last 54 years, and they have all become part of the Josey Family. To see a clinic filled with so many students who were making their first trip to the Josey Ranch was incredible. We are truly blessed to be able to touch so many kids and adults in their dreams and passions.”

Along with these Texas students, one family came from Colorado. Andre Coelho, a native Brazilian, brought his family and 9-year-old, Maria Coellho, to ride in the clinic. The Coelho’s are currently staying in Colorado but going back to Brazil soon. They took the chance to attend a Josey Clinic before returning home.

Namibia Travel

Editor note:

Today I received this email from Tom Allin – World Traveler.  He forwarded photos and a story from a friend.  I thought that some of us  Harrison County travelers should see what real travelers do.

Tom wrote:

We met Thomas in the middle of nowhere in the mountains of northwest India.  He and his wife were driving east and we were driving west.  We went by each other and then both of us put on the brakes and jumped out to talk.  We probably saw less than 20 vehicles on the road/trail that day.  I have no idea how he was able to drive his Man truck on the road we had just completed, too big for the road.

They are from Switzerland and have been exploring Africa for at least the last 2.5 years – the pandemic didn’t slow their travels down.  We met them four years ago in India.  He is an amateur photographer — I think some of his photos are very good, and there are lots of photos.  Some pretty wild men hairdos from Namibia where most of the photos were taken.  A few photographs from South Africa.

Blending Images

Photography – March 13, 2022

By Ron Munden

Blending Images

******************

About five years ago I took a week off to attend the Texas School of Professional Photography.  The school is conducted once each year in the Dallas area.  It offers some 30  to 40 classes on a wide variety of subjects.  As I recall about 1500 people attended the year I went.

I wanted to take training  on a subject that I knew almost nothing about.   I selected a course on fine-art photography.  The class was taught by award-winning  fine-art photographer Thom Rouse.  He is Chicago based and has been photographing  professionally since 1994.

Thom’s book, After the Camera – Digital Transformations for Conceptual Nude and Portrait Photography served as the” textbook”/ inspiration  for this class.  All the class work was done using Photoshop. Although,  I had been using Photoshop for over 30 years, this class was the most challenging class have taken  since I got out of graduate school in 1970.

I am very impressed by Thom’s work and decided I was going to commit time to increasing my understanding of the process and working to create images similar to those in Tom’s book.  Of course, then I returned to the real world I completely lost sight of the goal.

And then came March 2020 bringing the COVID pandemic to this country.  My full plate quickly became an empty plate.  I had spare time and nowhere to go. I dusted off the class notes that I took in Dallas and began to work on blending images.

Now I produce simple blended images or Thom might say, “digital transformations for conceptual nude and portrait photography.”

My images are still very simple.  My images usually involve 5 to 20 layers and I can produce up to 3 images during the hour that I devote to this project most days.  Thom’s  creations involve  40 to 100s of layers and take him days if not weeks to complete.  The quality of his work reflects the care and time he puts into creating with final product.

I sold my first photos and  became a street artist in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1970.  With the exception of one period of about three  years  when I put my camera away,  I have shot continuously for over 50 year.  Some of those years I shot over 40,000 images but I do not think I have done anything creative in the last 15 years.

Although my blended images are simple and sometimes amateurish,  I feel like I am being creative and will continue down this road.  Look out Thom – I am only 90 layers behind you!

Opinion: Ukraine

By George Smith  –March 13, 2022

Yes, the situation worries me. I don’t like the concept of war in any sense, regardless of circumstances. I understand at times that personal safety, protecting one’s country and family and protection of one’s friends and allies requires a strong response.

That said, throughout history wars have mostly been about the psychological bugaboos surrounding four elements: Turf, territory, title and ego.

Many times, one or more of these elements are the motivating factors of wars. In the case of Vladimir Putin and his ordered invasion of Ukraine encompass three (maybe all four) of those elements. He has his turf, wants more territory, believes he is ordained as the world’s leader and has a gargantuan ego.

With those four elements at work…what will stop him? The Ukraine borders? Since when in history did borders stop any invader set on domination, increasing his power and influence and believing that conquering others was his destiny?

CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 3/9/2022

J. HARRIS: Covid attacks are cooling off at present. FLU cases are increasing.

Now is a good time to get your flu shot and keep your Covid Boosters up to date. See your dentist and get your mammograms and checkups. Is your blood pressure doing alright? Avoid sick people and don’t let your family go out if they are even a little bit sick. In areas where the majority of the population is unvaccinated, continue to be wary and masked in crowds.

Covid vaccinations and boosters are now available at most area pharmacies, including 4th Boosters.

Flu and Covid Vaccinations are available at  Harrison County Health Department as are  4th. Boosters for “Immunocompramized” individuals, in various categories that almost include many older individuals. You don’t need a doctor’s statement to prove that you are immunocompromised. You do not have to show any documents. Also, by getting boosters, you will not be “wasting” vaccines that someone else might need. Plenty of Covid vaccine is currently available in the US.  ”Individuals should ask their personal physicians if they are eligible for and need  a 4th Booster.” You must fill out 3 short forms, one of which states that you are ”Immunocompramized” and therefore eligible for the 4th Jab. Various drug stores are able to do this, but they might not be as “enlightened” about 4th Jabs as are the various county Health Departments. The Marshall/Harrison County Health Dept. can be reached at 903 938 8338. You should call for their schedule before going by. (They are next door to the hospital). They are not open for injections every day. You can also get a FLU SHOTS at the Health Dept. if you need it. Talk to your doctor. I can not advise individuals to get a 4th. jab, but I “qualified” and got one. Also, a certain Norwegian Housekeeper is waiting for the 6 months to elapse from the date of her 3rd Jab to get her 4th.

Omicron sub-variant BA.2 makes up 11.6% of COVID variants in U.S. – CDC

”…Omicron sub-variant BA.2 makes up 11.6% of COVID variants in U.S. – CDC’

(J. Harris: BA.2  probably not as deadly but more contagious than regular Omicron. Vaccines protect against severe disease. Reinfections are not uncommon.

France’s new COVID-19 infections start creeping up again

French health authorities reported 93,050 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, the highest daily total since Feb 22, and an increase of 16.6% versus a week ago.

(J. Harris: No mention was made of which Covid strain is in France now, but a Variant B.1.640.2 ( AKA I.H.U)was reported in France and Poland earlier this year, thought to have originated in Cameroon. I would also guess that it could be BA.2 as well since that Variant has been all over Denmark. It seems that most of the Variants that have been recently studied by genetic sequencing are responsive to our current vaccines. Like the Deltas, the Omicron variants are less virulent in vaccinated folks. So, at present most of the more medically sophisticated countries are lessening dependency of quarantines, masks, spacing, crowd avoidance and the like. They are placing more reliance on testing, voluntary isolation, and VACCINATIONS.)

AND LASTLY:

Lewis Grizzard said: In the south there’s a difference between ‘Naked’ and ‘Nekkid.’ ‘Naked’ means you don’t have any clothes on. ‘Nekkid’ means you don’t have any clothes on and you’re up to somethin’.

Ate salad for dinner. Mostly croutons and tomatoes. Really just one big round crouton covered with tomato sauce and cheese FINE, it was a pizza…. OK, I ate a pizza!  Are you happy now?

Arming Ukraine

World News – March 8, 2022

from  New York Times

‘Arming Ukraine: 17,000 Anti-Tank Weapons in 6 Days and a Clandestine Cybercorps’

The United States has walked to the edge of direct conflict with Russia in an operation that is reminiscent of the Berlin airlift of 1948-49, but far more complex.

******************

On a snowy tarmac at Amari Air Base in northern Estonia on Sunday morning, pallets of rifles, ammunition and other weapons were being loaded onto one of the largest cargo planes in the world, an Antonov AN-124, belonging to the Ukrainian air force. It is an artifact of the Cold War, built and purchased when Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union.

Now it is being turned back against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, part of a vast airlift that American and European officials describe as a desperate race against time, to get tons of arms into the hands of Ukrainian forces while their supply routes are still open. Scenes like this, reminiscent of the Berlin airlift — the famed race by the Western allies to keep West Berlin supplied with essentials in 1948 and 1949 as the Soviet Union sought to choke it off — are playing out across Europe.

In less than a week, the United States and NATO have pushed more than 17,000 antitank weapons, including Javelin missiles, over the borders of Poland and Romania, unloading them from giant military cargo planes so they can make the trip by land to Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and other major cities. So far, Russian forces have been so preoccupied in other parts of the country that they have not targeted the arms supply lines, but few think that can last.
