CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS –11/03/2021

WOOPS, My local chart had an error yesterday. I put Smith County in the wrong slot. Thank you Dr. Allman.

The C.D.C. recommends Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine for children ages 5 to 11.

”…While relatively few of the 29 million children in this age group will be fully immunized a month from now, even partial vaccination will provide some protection against the coronavirus. Every million doses given to children ages 5 to 11 would prevent about 58,000 cases and 226 hospitalizations in that group, according to the C.D.C…”

Starting next year, some immunocompromised people may receive a fourth Covid vaccine dose, the C.D.C. says.

”…people who are moderately and severely immunocompromised may receive a total of four vaccine doses,” with the fourth coming at least six months after the third, the C.D.C.’s guidelines said….The C.D.C. also recommends that moderately and severely immunocompromised adults who received Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose vaccine get another dose of any one of the three vaccine brands, at least two months after their initial shot.

A Ukrainian town tried an experiment in mass vaccination. It worked.

”…An experiment in Ukraine that pursued an aggressive campaign to vaccinate most inhabitants of one small town has yielded the expected results: very low infection rates and no hospitalizations for Covid-19….In the end, it took two months to vaccinate 72 percent of the town’s [6,000] residents…( Ukraine’s nationwide rate of 16 percent, which is the lowest [vaccination rate] in Europe.)….Across the country, cases and hospitalizations are soaring, with an average of 21,364 new cases a day over the past week. …But life in Morshyn goes on as usual. It has no patients hospitalized with Covid and only 19 cases of the virus, 15 of them in people who were not vaccinated.

Experts Predict New But Less Severe COVID Surge This Winter

(J. Harris: EXCELLENT, short article. Read it all. I agree with it. )

FROM HOPKINS

1. A NEW KIND OF VACCINE

Science & Technology

Complete Protection By a Single-dose Skin Patch–delivered SARS-CoV-2 Spike Vaccine (Science Advances) Here, we use the high-density microarray patch (HD-MAP) to deliver a SARS-CoV-2 spike subunit vaccine directly to the skin. We show that the vaccine is thermostable on the patches, with patch delivery enhancing both cellular and antibody immune responses. Elicited antibodies potently neutralize clinically relevant isolates including the Alpha and Beta variants. Last, a single dose of HD-MAP–delivered spike provided complete protection from a lethal virus challenge in an ACE2-transgenic mouse model. Collectively, these data show that HD-MAP delivery of a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine was superior to traditional needle-and-syringe vaccination and may be a significant addition to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic.

2. Biden to Push Schools to Set Up Routine COVID Testing for Kids, Staff (ABC News) The Biden administration is launching a new effort with The Rockefeller Foundation to encourage schools to set up surveillance COVID testing for students and staff, ABC News has learned. The effort, which will be led by the Education Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, comes seven months after President Joe Biden pledged $10 billion for testing by schools.

3.  Labs With No One to Run Them: Why Public Health Workers Are Fleeing the Field (California Healthline) There were days, nights and weekends in the early months of the pandemic when Denise Von Bargen was the only person running covid tests at the public health lab in Ventura County. She once had eight or nine employees to assist her, but, one by one, they had all retired or left for other jobs. Like other public health laboratories in California charged with broad-scale disease testing and surveillance, the Ventura lab received federal and state money for new equipment and short-term hires to bolster its response to covid-19. But the funding was temporary, and Von Bargen, the director, could not use it to increase the salaries of her employees, who could earn more money doing less work in the private sector.

AND LASTLY:

DRESSING UP:  A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals.

ARGUMENTS: A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.
