COVID STATS FOR 3 AUGUST:
FROM THE MNM TODAY FOR HARRISON COUNTY:
1. 3. 2. BARDA Partnering with Cepheid to Develop Two New COVID-19 Diagnostics (Homeland Preparedness News) With the COVID-19 pandemic entering a new phase, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) continues to emphasize testing in addition to the growing number of vaccines, and as such, has entered a new agreement with Cepheid, Inc. to develop two additional diagnostics. These diagnostics are respectively known as the Xpert Pan-Coronavirus test and the Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2/Flu/RSV test. The Xpert Pan test will detect and distinguish between the seven known coronaviruses that infect humans, along with emerging coronaviruses. In the case of Xpert Xpress, the test will allow testing of pooled samples from multiple individuals within a population to provide more rapid testing of multiple people and conserve critical resources. Under the pair’s arrangement, Cepheid will perform studies to achieve 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Xpert Pan test and move toward gaining Emergency Use Authorization for the Xpert Xpress …”
2. The COVID vaccine makers tell all
(J. Harris: A book review and mention of BBC film)
3. COVID Boosters for Wealthy Nations Spark Outrage (Nature) Israel has announced plans to begin giving booster shots to older adults next week, in the hope of increasing their protection against COVID-19 — and a number of other wealthy countries are considering the same. But global-health researchers warn that this strategy could set back efforts to end the pandemic. Each booster, they say, represents a vaccine dose that could instead go to low- and middle-income countries, where most citizens have no protection at all, and where dangerous coronavirus variants could emerge as cases surge. Datahttp://easttexastowns.com/PDF2021/allin210521a.pdf do not yet show that extra doses are needed to save lives, researchers say, except perhaps for people with compromised immune systems, who might fail to generate much of an antibody response to the initial COVID-19 shots.
Updated COVID-19 Vaccines Needed to Combat Virus Variants
The UK’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies published a paper on July 30, 2021, which says ‘the eradication of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus will be unlikely. We have high confidence in stating that there will always be variants.’…Furthermore, ‘We describe hypothetical scenarios by which SARS-CoV-2 could further evolve and acquire, through mutation, phenotypes of concern, which we assess according to possibility….
(J. Harris: I went to the original and marked it up as to relevance to me. If read carefully (and slowly) it makes me wonder why viruses haven’t wiped out most forms of life.! This article does a fabulous job of explaining how virtual disease can spread and what we can do about it — or not. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST:
“A TRUE STORY”
The nun comes and tells the Priest that Mrs. LePeau is outside and wants the father to bless her poodle.
“What?! I am an emissary of the Holy Roman Father; I do not bless mere animals; away with this woman.”
“Father, Father, Mrs. LePeau, you know, she gave a million bucks last year.”
“Why didn’t you tell me that dog was Catholic.”
(“Why didn’t someone tell me Covid was bad?”)
