CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 07/07/2021

I plan to cut way back on these mailouts. Yesterday I talked to an old friend (in his late 70’s) with cancer on chemo and whose wife is also not well. They plan to travel and wanted to ask me about certain destinations. Then, they plan to entertain a large group at their home.  Neither has been vaccinated and have no plans to get vaccinated because they’ve heard a lot of bad things about the vaccine. And, yes,  they have been reading or looking at my stuff for about 1 ½ years. They like the jokes. Allegedly, they realize they would likely die if they caught Covid.  [Expletive Deleted]….Folks, Missouri is close by and it’s  an other states with unvaccinated populations, like East Texas, are likely to see Delta Delta Delta, and I don’t mean the pretty sorority type of Deltas. In 10-14 days we’ll see if we had any Super Spreader events locally during the July 4th holiday.

FROM THE NYTIMES

‘Please take this seriously’

The Delta variant could end Australia’s pursuit of ‘Covid Zero.’

SYDNEY, Australia — Three days after the emergence of a rare Covid case in Sydney, around 40 friends gathered for a birthday party. Along with cake and laughter, there was a hidden threat: One of the guests had unknowingly crossed paths with that single Covid case…Two weeks later, 27 people from the party have tested positive, along with 14 close contacts. And the seven people at the gathering who were not infected? They were all vaccinated.

For Australia and every other nation pursuing a so-called “Covid zero” approach, including China and New Zealand, the gathering in western Sydney amounts to a warning: Absent blanket vaccinations, the fortress cannot hold without ever more painful restrictions.

Hopkins:

1. Massively Scaled-up Testing for SARS-CoV-2 RNA via Next-generation Sequencing of Pooled and Barcoded Nasal and Saliva Samples (Nature) Frequent and widespread testing of members of the population who are asymptomatic for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is essential for the mitigation of the transmission of the virus. Despite the recent increases in testing capacity, tests based on quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays cannot be easily deployed at the scale required for population-wide screening.

2, WINTER VACCINATION PLANS FOR UK:  UK VACCINE BOOSTERS The UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) published interim advice on a potential SARS-CoV-2 vaccine booster program for winter of 2021-22. JCVI advises that any potential booster program begin in September 2021 to maximize protection of those populations most vulnerable to COVID-19 and reduce the occurrence of severe disease. Additionally, JCVI recommends annual influenza vaccines also be administered in the fall, ideally utilizing a synergistic approach that would support delivery and maximize uptake of both vaccines. The potential booster program should be offered in two stages: Stage 1 will offer a third dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and the annual influenza vaccine in September to immunosuppressed persons aged 16 and older, adults aged 16 and older who are considered clinically extremely vulnerable, those living in residential care facilities for older adults, frontline health and social care workers, and all adults aged 70 and older. Stage 2 will be implemented as soon as practicable after Stage 1 to offer a third SARS-CoV-2 vaccine dose and annual influenza vaccine to all adults over 50 years old, adults 16-49 years old who are in an influenza or COVID-19 at-risk group as noted in the Green Book, and adult household contacts of immunosuppressed persons. Additional scientific data will be considered as it becomes available prior to JCVI sharing final advice.
