Houston is first city to record all major COVID strains, new study finds
“Houston is the nation’s first city to record every major variant of the novel coronavirus — many of which are more contagious than the original strain…The numbers of the major variants we have identified in our large sequencing study are disquieting. The genome data indicate that these important variants are now geographically widely distributed in the Houston metropolitan region.”
(J. Harris: If Houston already has all of the Mutants, we’ll get them too! No matter what the politicians say about not wearing masks and allowing crowds, they won’t be around when you’re blowing bubbles through an endotracheal tube all over some crowded ICU — or cooling off in the back end of a refrigerated truck. We don’t know how effective our various vaccines will be against the MUTANTS. And, only 6.5% of Texans have been vaccinated so far. Don’t fool around and get sick now. Keep on being careful. We’re getting there. Get your vaccine, and help others get theirs. Once again our governor is demonstrating his propensity for poor timing.

Community Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 at Three Fitness Facilities — Hawaii, June–July 2020 Twenty-one COVID-19 cases were linked to an index case in a fitness instructor, who, along with a patient who was also an instructor, taught classes <1 day, 1 to <2 days, and ≥2 days before symptom onset; aggregate attack rates were 95%, 13%, and 0%, respectively. To reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission in fitness facilities, staff members and patrons should wear a mask, and facilities should enforce consistent and correct mask use (including during high-intensity activities) and physical distancing, improve ventilation, and remind patrons and staff members to stay home when ill. Exercising outdoors or virtually could further reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission risk. (CDC MMWR, 2/24/2021)
2. Biden Administration Secures Supply of New COVID-19 Therapeutic Treatment The Biden Administration announced today that it has secured a supply of a recently authorized COVID-19 therapeutic treatment. The US Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense collaborated to purchase 100,000 treatment courses of a second therapeutic treatment from Eli Lilly and Company. This treatment uses two monoclonal antibodies, bamlanivimab and etesevimab, to treat non-hospitalized, high-risk COVID-19 patients. (Public Health Emergency, 2/26/2021)
