BELOW IS A LETTER THAT I JUST RECEIVED. WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE AUTHOR, I ATTACH IT IN ITS ENTIRETY:

Jim,

I don’t understand the non-mask wearing in East Texas.  Everything I read by the medical professionals and organizations clearly state that wearing a mask is the number one way to stop the spread of the C19 virus besides vaccine.

Yesterday I had business with the State’s Motor Vehicle Department.  As I approached the door, I saw a large sign on both the door and side window announcing masks are required.  While inside I was one of five adult customers and the only one wearing a mask.

Next stop was Albertson. As I approach the doors there are two pole signs roughly 15 to 20 apart stating you must wear a mask.  Am guessing at least a third of the customers were not wearing masks or wearing them incorrectly.

Next stop was a Texaco gas station in Marshall.  Again, on the door’s signs stating you must wear a mask.  I was the only customer inside and I was wearing a mask.  But the two workers were not wearing a mask.

A quick stop at Kroger: mask signs and multiple people not wearing masks.

Last stop was Firestone and only other customer in waiting area isn’t wearing a mask.

Have our schools failed us so badly that many in our community can’t read?  Or do the people of East Texas no longer look out for their neighbors and don’t care if they are spreading a deadly virus that may kill their neighbor or family member?

We spent better than six months in Tucson, AZ.  The stores and businesses have the same “mask required” signs.  No one is allowed to enter these businesses without a mask.  I will admit I saw one painter standing at the paint counter at Home Depot with a mask below his mouth — this is the only person I saw in six months not wearing a mask.  I also had to have my temperature taken at medical offices, a hospital, and an eyewear store.

I don’t get it.  Signs say wear a mask before entering and in East Texas people either believe these signs aren’t real or at least not meant for them — must be grand to be so special.  And East Texans continue to die from a virus that a mask is the second-best defense against catching it or spreading it.

Read the sign and comply. Compliance isn’t giving up your freedom, it’s to keep you from murdering a neighbor, friend, or family member.

(Thank you, Mr. Allin, and welcome home.)
