CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Povidone-iodine nasal antiseptic solutions at concentrations as low as 0.5% rapidly inactivate SARS-CoV-2 at contact times as short as 15 seconds. Intranasal use of PVP-I has demonstrated safety at concentrations of 1.25% and below and may play an adjunctive role in mitigating viral transmission beyond personal protective equipment.

J. Harris: After reading this JAMA article, I made a 0.5% solution and my wife and I use it if we stray out of our nest.When we used to go inside the grocery, we sprayed our noses before going in and on coming out. The base chemical discussed in 10% Betadine, which is readily available and inexpensive, but not for internal use or nasal inhalation — I do not know how much this helps prevent Covid. I boiled some water and carefully mixed the Betadine with it and put it in a small nasal spray bottle. (My wife had to do the math.) I think it might work. I think it is safe. Use it at your own risk. You can buy it as above: The commercial solution discussed above is a 1.25 % solution and is manufactured for nasal use.

(J. Harris: I don’t remember reading this article in The Atlantic last January, and I didn’t know who Ronald Klain was. I wish I’d paid some attention to it. I bring it back now, despite my usual effort to avoid politics, because Ronald Klain is likely to be best Covid Czar that the Biden administration could have found — and he is the incoming Chief of Staff for President Elect Biden.)

Yep, he’s a Yankee, a political lawyer married to an activist lawyer, but he was a law clerk for much admired and respected former Supreme Court Justice Byron White. To be sure, he has also been a lobbyist, and a bureaucrat and is a card carrying member of the Democratic Party. He has worked for Clinton, Gore, Bidden, and he was the successful Ebola Czar for President Obama. Potential political and scientific problems due to Covid that he predicted in the above article have, to our great misfortune, come true. I think he will be an experienced and focused Covid leader and manager for the American population (and the world?) in the next few years. God, I hope so. I’m going to bet on it.
