CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 12/14/2020

12/14/2020

Hello

(J. Harris: It appears that TSA Area G had a peak of disease about 14 days after Thanksgiving. Currently, the state totals are creeping up, but East Texas area G has peaked out for the time. If we are careful Christmas, perhaps our local and nearby area  won’t be inundated after after the first of the year. Everyone I know knows someone locally with Covid. Be careful. )

Ahead of the holiday season, Texas’ ICU capacity is the lowest since the start of the pandemic

“…Staff at Texas Health Frisco converted beds used for baby deliveries and postpartum recovery to medical overflow, faced with an increasing number of patients with COVID-19, said Barclay Berdan, CEO of Texas Health Resources, one of the largest hospital systems in North Texas…In Texarkana, an East Texas city along the Arkansas border, Christus St. Michael Health System’s 32-bed ICU has been near or at capacity in recent weeks. Dr. Loren Robinson, vice president of medical affairs, said the hospital is working to add another eight ICU beds and hire more personnel to staff them. She worries that new cases, caused by travel and large gatherings for Thanksgiving, could further strain the community’s medical resources.”

An EUA for Bamlanivimab—A Monoclonal Antibody for COVID-19

“The investigational IV monoclonal antibody bamlanivimab (LY-CoV555) has been granted an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA based on its association with a reduction in emergency department visits and hospitalizations in recently diagnosed patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 considered to be at high risk of progressing to severe disease and/or hospitalization. The drug needs to be infused over 1 hour in a facility equipped to manage anaphylaxis. Bamlanivimab has not been beneficial in hospitalized patients.”
