CORONAVIRUS INFO PROVIDED BY DR. JIM HARRIS – 1210/2020

12/10/2020

HELLO

East Texas is doing relatively well in the patch work covid infestation  which is overwhelming much of Texas and the US, and the World.  Our area numbers are moving up, but slowly. Play it safe. There are a lot of sick people in Marshall right now, and they are the younger folks who are out too much and perhaps have been careless.

SARS-CoV-2 Transmission among Marine Recruits during Quarantine

Our study showed that in a group of predominantly young male military recruits, approximately 2% became positive for SARS-CoV-2, as determined by qPCR assay, during a 2-week, strictly enforced quarantine. Multiple, independent virus strain transmission clusters were identified. Shared rooms and shared platoon membership were risk factors for transmission. Most study participants with positive qPCR tests were asymptomatic, and all cases among participants and nonparticipants were identified as the result of scheduled testing rather than clinical qPCR testing performed as a result of daily screening.

U.S. Meatpacker Smithfield Foods Offers to Store COVID-19 Vaccines in Ultra-cold Freezers (Reuters) Smithfield Foods, the world’s biggest pork processor, said on Thursday it had offered to help U.S. health officials distribute COVID-19 vaccines and store them in ultra-cold freezers that are in high demand to support a public vaccination campaign.

Small Particle Aerosol Exposure of African Green Monkeys to MERS-CoV as a Model for Highly Pathogenic Coronavirus Infection

This study describes scientifically exposing  some monkey to variable doses of a Mers virus to inhale. They all got sick, none died.  They were sacrificed, and at autopsy,  they had significant residual lung damage despite having what seemed to be mild disease—”…the presence of histologic lesions even after AGMs had mostly recovered from MERS-CoV infection might be of use as a model of long-term lung dysfunction observed in MERS and SARS survivors.’ (Note that the  virus given to the monkeys is not exactly the same as our  Covid-19  (SARS-CoV-2).

The reason that I cite this work is that it contains a wonderful review of the various similar viruses and gives a bit of  recent history about them. These Coronavirus  (SARS-CoV. MERS-CoV. SARS-CoV-2)  are similar but different and will be a lasting medical menace, as was predicted several years ago. The first two viruses were controlled world wide after they appeared. Here’s a bit of the history:

“Since 2002, three novel coronaviruses have emerged into human populations, causing severe respiratory disease: severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) during 2002–2004; Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), starting in 2012; and most recently, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), starting in 2019 (1,2). All 3 of these highly pathogenic coronaviruses can cause lethal respiratory disease characterized by acute atypical pneumonia…..Coronaviridae is a family of positive-sense, single-stranded RNA genome enveloped viruses that includes the genera alphacoronavirus, betacoronavirus, gammacoronavirus, and deltacoronavirus. Highly pathogenic coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2 (all betacoronaviruses), likely emerged from bats, which are a diverse reservoir of alphacoronaviruses and betacoronaviruses (5–8). Cross-species transmission of MERS-CoV or similar zoonotic precursor viruses from bats to camels established an intermediate reservoir of MERS-CoV in dromedary camels (9). MERS-CoV replicates in the upper respiratory tract of camels, but camels demonstrate only mild disease signs, and a high percentage of camels are seropositive for MERS-CoV antibodies.

(Incidentally, I plan never again to ride, eat, or smoke, or pal around with another camel.)

The Inequity of Isolation

(J. Harris: Empathetic short article written by a young intern caught up in Covid. He understands and tries to alleviate isolation problems that Covid brings his non Covid patients as well.  This is a really good read that illustrates the frustrations of all concerned. Doctors and medical schools and hospitals are all learning and improvising (and would be absolutely lost without the nurses and other health care workers.)

Oregon suspends license of physician who discouraged mask-wearing

The board alleges Dr. LaTulippe engaged in “conduct that is contrary to medical ethics and does or might constitute a danger to the health or safety of the public…It also accuses him of “gross negligence.”
