(J. Harris: follow the green above. Total cases of COVID requiring hospitalization are going down in Texas. Total cases may go up, but we are testing more and will find many asymptomatic but positive COVID cases. In our area, we have plenty of ICU beds).

FROM JOHNS HOPKINS1. Hospitalization Rates and Characteristics of Children Aged <18 Years Hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 — COVID-NET, 14 States, March 1–July 25, 2020 Analysis of pediatric COVID-19 hospitalization data from 14 states found that although the cumulative rate of COVID-19–associated hospitalization among children (8.0 per 100,000 population) is low compared with that in adults (164.5), (BUT)one in three hospitalized children was admitted to an intensive care unit. Public health authorities and clinicians should continue to track pediatric SARS-CoV-2 infections. Reinforcement of prevention efforts is essential in congregate settings that serve children, including childcare centers and schools. (CDC MMWR, 8/7/2020)
Additional Pediactric information from the American Acadmey of Pediatrics:1. Testing (9 states reported)*

Children made up between 3%-12% of total state tests, and between 3.7%-18.6% of children tested were tested positive

2. 179,990 new child cases reported from 7/9-8/6 (200,184 to 380,174), a 90% increase in child cases over 4 weeks

2. Association Between Youth Smoking, Electronic Cigarette Use, and Coronavirus Disease 2019(Journal of Adolescent Health) COVID-19 diagnosis was five times more likely among ever-users of e-cigarettes only (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.82–13.96), seven times more likely among ever-dual-users (95% CI: 1.98–24.55), and 6.8 times more likely among past 30-day dual-users (95% CI: 2.40–19.55).

3. Antibody Drugs Could Be One of the Best Weapons Against Covid-19. But Will They Matter?(STAT) Despite experts’ eagerness to see the data, however, there remains a debate over just how significant a role any antibody treatment might play in changing the course of the pandemic.(J. Harris: If we can’t vaccinate yet and if there are not traditional antibiotics that help, why not use monoclonal antibodies to folks who are just exposed or who just have become ill? This article mentions several potential possibilities–click above).

Wearing a neck gaiter may be worse than no mask at all, researchers find
“The high droplet count could be linked to the neck gaiter’s porous fabric breaking up bigger particles into many little ones that are more likely to hang around in the air longer, Fischer said in the video. This effect makes wearing them possibly “counterproductive…It’s not the case that any mask is better than nothing,” he said. “There are some masks that actually hurt rather than do good.”
