Positive tests per Thousand Tests Administered
1. Mississippi: 20.5 percent positive

New daily cases: 1,036

Tests per 1,000: 1.6

5. Texas: 16.2

New daily cases: 7,384

Tests per 1,000: 1.6

So Texas has 16.2 positive tests out of every 1000 tests that are administered, which is the fifth-highest number of new cases per 1000 tests performed in the US. This rate of positivity is due to 7,384 new cases yesterday in Texas. Only 1.6 people out of every thousand residents of Texas are being tested daily.

Johns Hopkins:1. Clinical Course and Molecular Viral Shedding Among Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Community Treatment Center in the Republic of Korea (JAMA) In this cohort study that included 303 patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection isolated in a community treatment center in the Republic of Korea, 110 (36.3%) were asymptomatic at the time of isolation and 21 of these (19.1%) developed symptoms during isolation.  Many individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection remained asymptomatic for a prolonged period, and viral load was similar to that in symptomatic patients; therefore, isolation of infected persons should be performed regardless of symptoms.

I just finished John Barry’s “The Great Influenza: The Story of the Greatest Pandemic in History.” I believe Barry may be about the smartest author I’ve ever read. His scientific knowledge as well as his appreciation of medical history is astounding. He researches his subject of interest extensively, almost too extensively at times. Despite the fact that I have read several books about and studied in school the “Spanish Flu,”  only now do I realize that until I read this book, I knew almost nothing about that pandemic, or, indeed, virology or American medical history.

Despite the fact that his book came out in 2004, it is almost mandatory reading now with the COVID pandemic ravaging the world. Sure enough, people are making many, many of the same “pandemic mistakes” all over again.

This book is one of the five most useful books that I have ever read. Read or listen to this book and you will better understand what is happening now. There is a sameness to all of these viral pandemics caused by viruses from birds or animals that accidentally get transmitted to humans where they mutate and spread and cause disease against which humans have no natural or acquired immunity. Jim Harris, M.D.
