Hypertension, renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inhibition, and COVID-19 (ARE NOT AN ADDITIONAL RISK FACTOR IN COVID -19 INFECTIONS–ARE AS SAFE AS OTHER BLOOD PRESSURE PILLS)
“…Compared with the use of other antihypertensive drugs, current use of RAAS inhibitors was not associated with increased risk of COVID-19 requiring admission to hospital (odds ratio [OR] 0·94, 95% CI 0·77–1·15, adjusted for potential confounding factors), or increased risk of severe complications from COVID-19 needing intensive care or leading to a fatal outcome (1·08, 0·80–1·47). These findings were uninfluenced by age, sex, or background cardiovascular risk. Moreover, excluding aldosterone antagonists and renin inhibitors and focusing only on ACE inhibitors or angiotensin-receptor blockers made no difference to these conclusions.”J. Harris Comment: This is to say that a common class of blood pressure pills is just as safe as any other.  Hypertension itself is a risk factor, or course.

  • Candesartan (Atacand)
  • Eprosartan.
  • Irbesartan (Avapro)
  • Losartan (Cozaar)
  • Olmesartan (Benicar)

Clinical course of severe and critical COVID-19 in hospitalized pregnancies: a US cohort study

Conclusion

In hospitalized pregnant women with severe or critical COVID-19 infection, admission typically occurred about 7 days after symptom onset, and the duration of hospitalization was 6 days (6 severe versus 12 critical). Critically ill women had a high rate of ARDS, and there was one case of cardiac arrest, but there were no cases of cardiomyopathy, or maternal mortality. Hospitalization for severe or critical COVID-19 infection resulted in delivery during the course of infection in 50% of this cohort, usually in the third trimester. There were no perinatal deaths in this cohort.

(HOW ABOUT SOME GOOD NEWS:  ALL THE MOTHERS AND BABIES LIVED).

(This is a cohort study of pregnant women with severe or critical COVID-19 infection hospitalized at 12 US institutions between March 5, 2020 and April 20, 2020.

Of 64 pregnant women hospitalized with COVID-19, 44 (69%) had severe and 20 (31%) critical disease).

Abbott Coronavirus Test Missed a Large Number of Positive Results Caught by a Rival Firm, Preliminary Study Says
(Washington Post) The Abbott coronavirus test hailed by President Trump and used by the White House failed to detect infected samples in a large number of cases that were caught by a rival firm, a preliminary study says. The speedy Abbott test, which is supposed to determine in five to 13 minutes whether a person has the virus, missed a third of the positive samples found by the diagnostic company Cepheid when both tests used nasopharyngeal swabs, said the study done by a group from New York University. It missed more than 48 percent when both firms’ tests used dry nasal swabs.
