May 1, 2020 – Today we have 12 new cases of the COVID-19 virus to report in Harrison County bringing our total to 120. We also have no new recoveries to report. Removing the 7 fatalities and 15 recoveries leaves us with 98 active cases. We will provide an update to the graphic that breaks down the age ranges, gender and locations on Monday. The Marshall Harrison County Health District has worked collaboratively with the Texas Department of State Health Services providing assistance related to COVID-19 at Harrison County long-term care facilities. Harrison County has confirmed 50 cases of COVID 19 that are related to long term care facilities in our county. We will continue to provide assistance to these facilities and appreciate each facilities efforts and responsiveness during this difficult time. According to the Governor’s Report to Open Texas, recent reports highlight the rapid increase of confirmed COVID-19 cases in nursing homes and assisted living communities in Texas. Part of the plan includes recommendations to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 cases in long-term care facilities. Harrison County residents need to remain diligent in continuing to practice social distancing, avoid crowds, and limit physical contact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends using simple cloth face coverings in public to help slow the spread of the virus.
SHREVEPORT EARLY MAY
Shreveport ranks among the nation’s top 10 cities for decline in deaths related to COVID-19, according to a New York Times analysis.
Shreveport has shown a decline of 3.2 per 100,00 people decline in COVID-19-related deaths from last week. A week ago, Shreveport had 70 deaths related to COVID-19. This week, the number is 56.

As of 11:00am May 1, 2020, Dallas County Health and Human Services is reporting 187 additional positive cases of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total case count in Dallas County to 3,718, including 106 death

I received a verbal report yesterday that PANOLA COUNTY has 177 Active C-19 cases.

Coronavirus on the border: Why Mexico has so few cases compared with the U.S. JH: Mexico’s approach is about as far away as you can get from successful programs like South Korea, New Zeland, Iceland and others. Will they get away with it? I’d bet not, but it is important to watch Mexico closely in the next couple of months.

MAJOR AIRLINES MANDATING MASK USE Multiple major US airlines announced yesterday that passengers will be required to wear face masks onboard commercial aircraft starting in May. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not mandated mask use for airline passengers or crew, but the airlines themselves made the determination in response to pressure from employees and unions. Several airlines had previously announced face mask policies, but American, Delta, and United Airlines all announced policies yesterday. These represent 3 of the 4 largest airlines in the United States; the second-largest airline, Southwest Airlines, has reportedly not yet announced a mandatory mask use policy.
RESPIRATOR DECONTAMINATION A new decontamination system developed by Battelle is now operating in multiple cities across the United States. Over the past month, the system received US FDA authorization, and the company has deployed units in at least 7 states, with additional plans for others, including the Washington, DC area. The decontamination system utilizes vaporized hydrogen peroxide to kill viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, in N95 respirators, and the process can be performed as many as 20 times per respirator.
COVID-19 Reveals Urgent Need to Strengthen the World Health Organization
An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reviewing the historical achievements of the WHO as well as recent problems. The article and a couple of Letters to the Editor make some reasonable suggestions of what to do now. We need, the world needs the WHO. The WHO needs a “tone up” including more support to continue its important work, especially in areas that are medically underserved.
