New Yorkers have been recommended to forego SARS-CoV-2 testing, unless they are seriously ill, illustrating that the city does not yet have the capacity needed to deal with the current situation, let alone an increase that would allow for enhanced surveillance. Mayor de Blasio acknowledged that some of the existing social distancing measures could remain in place for months, even after the city passes its peak and begins to ease some restrictions.
NEW US CDC GUIDANCE FOR CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE PERSONNEL The US CDC published new guidance intended to enable critical infrastructure workers to remain on the job following a known or suspected exposure to SARS-CoV-2. The guidance requires that they remain healthy and that additional precautions are implemented. The guidance, which applies to personnel in 16 sectors of the workforce deemed to be critical, calls for temperature screening and symptom checks for all workers as well as self-monitoring by employees, mask usage, social distancing measures, and enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols to mitigate the risk of transmission at the workplace.

TEXAS A&M PANDEMIC EXPERT: CORONAVIRUS WILL HAVE 5 STAGES. WE’RE IN STAGE 2.

Our current pandemic is expected to have five phases:

Phase One: The first phase is containment. That’s when we try to keep the virus from entering our area and try to keep it from spreading in the community.

Phase Two, Mitigation: we are clearly in the mitigation phase now. It’s been a little over two weeks since Harris County issued a stay-at-home order. And one model shows that we still have two weeks to go before our area’s COVID-19 cases peak.

Phase Three: would be (a second stage of) containment BEFORE we have a vaccine to deploy. “I’m  optimistic that in three to six months we’ll have (a better treatment for coronavirus symptoms), a therapeutic in our toolkit that can rescue those who become severely ill. But it’s going to be at least 18 months, I believe, before there’s a vaccine available to deploy in any meaningful way. During this time (containment while waiting for vaccine) we need to restart our economy….and we need to do it safely.”

Phase Four: …is (a third stage of) containment once we have a vaccine. We’re going to get into a situation like we’re used to with seasonal flu, because I don’t think COVID is going away. In fact, I think we should anticipate that we’re going to have a second wave in in the fall.

Phase Five:  Making preparation for the next pandemic a national security priority.

Apple and Google unveiled a rare partnership to add technology to their smartphone platforms that will alert users if they have come into contact with a person with Covid-19. People must opt in to the system, but it has the potential to monitor about a third of the world’s population.
